Ed Hutchins is a professor at California University where he is head of Cognitive science. Ed Hutchins spent most of his career trying to understand human cognition in social, cultural and material context. Ed was originally trained as a cognitive anthropologist. The believes he follows are cultural practices as he thinks it is a key component of human cognition.

The early work that Ed Hutchins got involved in between 1975 and 1976 includes the relationships among language, culture and thought. Ed conducted research that gathered the information that he needed and focused on ethnographic research.
Ed is the director of the MCC Human Interface Laboratory and he established the Computer Graphics and Interactive Media research group. He has moved from the computer science department in 1993 to USD in 1997 where he become the professor of cognitive science working in the Human Computer Interaction Lab.
